World Cup fans will know that Alex Lauretano from Connecticut, USA, is a rare talent. As a regular on our World Cup circuit, it is hard to believe that she is only just 23 years old. Her list of achievements is truly outstanding. Twenty years experience on the water shows. Her winners list includes U21 PanAm Gold  medals in Tricks, Slalom, Jump and Overall, Tricks Gold in the World University Championships, National USA Gold in Slalom, Tricks, Jump and Overall, CanAm Gold in Slalom, Tricks, Jump and Overall – plus a Junior Girls National Jump Record and a Junior US Masters Course Record.

To get back to Alex and determination and bravery ……

Alex recently competed in the USA Collegiate Waterski Nationals. In the Jump event, as she cut far too late to the Ramp, she passed on her first attempt. She was even later on her second and this ended with a very spectacular crash which shocked the spectators. Surprisingly, she was back on the water for jump number three. After some bank-side treatment, she actually took the Jump title on that last extraordinary effort. The word extraordinary is not an exaggeration. A trip to the Hospital later that evening revealed a dislocated shoulder, a wrist fracture, a separated AC joint, cuts to her knuckles and a serious head cut which had to be stapled shut ! At this point, you and I would take a few weeks off, stay in bed and eat grapes.

Alex and that big crash !

OUCH - Head staples really hurt !

The next morning, yes, the morning after receiving those injuries, Alex Lauretano arrived back on site wearing a very elaborate cast on her broken arm. – not as a spectator but as an athlete ready for her Trick run. Making that effort can only have been painful. Obviously, a hand pass was out of the question – so she decided to borrow a Toe Ski and minutes later returned to the Dock with a winning score of 2940 points for the single pass. She also took third place in Overall !

As we said, World Cup Stars are both tough and talented. Alex Lauretano can safely add determination and bravery to her outstanding qualities. Next time you see Alex, stand back and show respect !!!  The great news is that Alex is already fully fit and we greatly look forward to seeing her in action once again at the Moomba Masters in Melbourne Australia in a few weeks time.
