HUGE CROWDS AGAIN ENJOY OPENING EVENTS AT KUCHING SARAWAK BORNEO STOP
Stars of Florida in Kuching
Practice kicked off on Friday at 07.30hrs on the downtown river site here in Kuching. With 32C from dawn, Riders and spectators were on site from the very start. By 09.30hrs, both Women and Men Practice was completed. The local organisation directed by Hanifah Yoong has been flawless and time management has been perfect from the start.
Following the Practice session in rolly waters, it was time to introduce the Stars of Florida Ski Show Team. Don Buffa yet again delivered a sample for the crowd which brought early morning applause from the appreciative audience. They will be back on Friday night for the enormous Malaysian Day Boat Parade Celebrations and Fireworks display. Being part of this Sarawak Regatta which dates from 1872 really is an honor for our World Cup Series.
So, at 10.30 hours, the Womens Semi-Finals kicked off. This immediately began with drama. Our Heat 1 first three Riders went down on their first trick. Were we about to see some real upsets here ? Ireland’s Sian Hurst was unlucky to be first out in the rolly water and others adjusted as this Heat progressed. Amber Wing AUS dominated ahead of Elke Venken BEL and both progressed to the Finals. Sian Hurst IRL and Robbie Rendo ARG will have to wait for tomorrow’s LCQ. In Heat 2, the standard rose again. Here World Champion Raimi Merrit USA was in a league of her own and went straight through to the finals. To the surprise of many Japan’s Miku Asai beat the rest of the field to also go through and waved to the spectators all the way back to the dock. This left Caroline Djupsjo SWE, Sasha Christian SIN and Gina Faccio RSA to join Sian Hurst and Robbie Rendo in the LCQ on Saturday.
On Saturday we also go live with our Webcast. For the details, please take a look at http://www.iwsf.com where you will also get the daily results.
Hot weather, very friendly and helpful hosts, great food and a non-stop action programme is making this another really great World Cup Stop.
