The EYRES Action Sports Games was officially launched in Mandurah today by Tourism Minister Kim Hames and Mayor of Mandurah Paddi Creevey OAM. The event will run in line with the Channel Seven Mandurah Crab Fest from March 16-18.

The EYRES Action Sports Games will make history by incorporating the first ever Australian International Waterski and Wakeboarding Federation (IWWF) World Cup Stop. The World’s best waterskiiers and wakeboarders from 24 countries will travel to Western Australia to take on Mandurah’s aquatic playground.

Confirmed to compete in the IWWF Mandurah World Cup Stop is World Number one Australian wakeboarder Harley Clifford, 2011 World Waterski Jump Champion and World Record holder Freddy Krueger, and Western Australia’s own Ryan Green who recently placed 3rd in the 2011 IWWF World Waterski Championships in Russia.

The event is a huge tourism drawcard for the region, with the City of Mandurah expected to host up to 128 national and international competitors, 18 judges and officials and an estimated 2,000 dedicated supporters.

The State Government has provided funding to the EYRES Action Sport Games over the next four years through Eventscorp’s Regional Events Program, which is funded by Royalties for Regions.

The EYRES Action Sports Games line-up will also include a national BMX and Skateboarding competition and an international Freestyle Motocross (FMX) Shootout, with the event’s total cash prize purse to exceed US$300,000.

It was also announced today that EYRES have been welcomed as naming rights sponsor for the 2012 event. EYRES is a Western Australian manufacturer and world leader in developing, constructing and distributing advanced eye protections for a number of industries including industrial, mining, sports, military, law enforcement and emergency services to name a few.

EYRES design premium performance prescription and non-prescription eyewear for the earth’s most hostile and unforgiving environments. EYRES Australia eye protector sunglasses feature cutting-edge technology and patented frame and lens innovations to ensure uncompromised eye protection.

Managing Director of EYRES Michel Audry said that his company was proud to sponsor and invest in bringing international and national action sport athletes into Western Australia.

“We recognise that the Action Sports Games and IWWF World Cup is a thrilling and unique event, and we are honored to take part in promoting a community event that encourages creativity, skill and diversity. Good luck to all participants involved,” he said.

Further details on the EYRES Action Sports Games, including the full athlete line-up, will be announced over the coming weeks.

In January every year, we meet Alan Morton in London, Chief Executive of ProActive TV, to agree plans for both the production and global distribution of our World Cup TV series. Having now completed together a total of 32 edited TV shows with ProActive, the process has been streamlined to ensure that no matter where the World Cup Stops take us, the same tight deadlines are met.

IWWF President Kuno Ritschard and Marketing Chairman Des Burke-Kennedy are now working with ProActive to expand the global distribution of the 26 minute edited World Cup show. It is also hoped to obtain more advance broadcast listings for our hosts and sponsors and to capitalize on some of the current changes taking place within the Broadcast industry. Formats for the World Cup Show are also being reviewed to strengthen the branding to help raise its international profile. Watch out for developments here shortly.

In the past year, three-event Waterskier Alex Lauretano USA has been one of the most consistent performers of the season. This is no coincidence. This third generation Lauretano athlete was born in Bristol, Connecticut in 1988. At just 17 years of age, she was already the Can Am Slalom, Tricks, Jump and Overall Champion. In 2006, she moved on to be the Junior US Masters Jump Champion plus the USA National Jump, Trick and Overall Champion. In 2008, she took the U21 Pan Am Trick, Jump, Slalom and Overall titles – plus the title of the World University Tricks Champion. It is hard to believe that Alex has still not reached the age of 21 with so much success achieved. Her long hours of training with Jack Travers, Matt Rini, Chet Raley, Freddy Krueger and others has certainly paid off. Now that she has arrived in the Open Division, we know that we will see a lot more of the talented Alex Lauretano on the World Cup podium in the seasons ahead.
INJURIES FOR SOME WORLD CUP STARS – LATEST UPDATES

Since our last Waterski World Cup Stop in Dubna, Russia, a great deal has happened in the lives of our athletes. As is often the case in major international competition, injuries are part of the mix no matter how good the preparations. As we now approach our next World Cup Stop in Liuzhou, China on October 1/3, some will have to miss this next World Cup adventure.

Narie Vympranietsova and Ageliki Andriopoulou with Akeliki's mother Cristiana in Calgary

The current two-time Ladies World Jump Champion, Ageliki Andriopoulou GRE, has had an ongoing knee problem for some time which came to a head after the 2009 Calgary World Championships. The good news is that she has already had successful surgery and expects to be back to full fitness and ready for a busy 2010 World Cup season. On the other hand, Marie Vympranietsova GRE was not quite so fortunate. She had a bad Jump crash at the Calgary World Championships and this spoiled her Worlds Finals. Having won the World Cup silver medal in Dubna Russia earlier this season, she is now awaiting knee surgery and also hopes to have this completed soon. Again, she hopes to be back to full strength and ready for our 2010 World Cup season. We wish both these great athletes a speedy recovery

Following a very bad arm injury in 2008, Nicolas LeForestier made a good early recovery this season but had a setback in mid-summer with a knee injury. His treatment continues and he is having a special knee brace designed to get him back to some high scoring toe-holds in the 2010 world Cup season – or sooner ! Olivier Fortamps BEL has had two major events to cope with this season – and injury plus a wedding – his own ! By all accounts, the wedding was a great day and his knee injury is healing well. Congratulations Olivier and we wish both you and Nicolas a very speedy recovery.

CHALLENGING WET START TO THE 2009 CALGARY WATERSKI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AT PREDATOR BAY WSC IN ALBERTA CANADA

The past 24 hours here in Calgary have reminded us all that we are indeed involved in an outdoor sport ! Once the official Practice time ended on Monday evening in reasonably good weather conditions, all were settling in to the prospect of a warm week ahead. The site is magnificent, the organization is first class and the entertainment for the athletes and officials last night at Calgary’s Lynnwood Ranch set a very friendly tone. Seeing our Skiers in Cowboy hats and enjoying the Square Dance routines certainly helped to settle the nerves.

This morning we awoke to black clouds, 12C temperatures and the likelihood of a very wet day. In fact, the rain has continued from dawn and shows little signs of moving elsewhere in the near future. So, it was a case of putting on the wet gear and seeing what Chief Judge Dimos Alexopoulos GRE could do with the programme for the day ahead. As it turned out, we saw some excellent Slalom and Tricks performances – but our Jumpers will have to wait for an altered Programme. Some have used this downtime to drive to other lakes to get some practice, hoping for better weather to return to the Calgary area soon. With two lakes here at the World Championships Predator Bay Club site, the options for catching up as the week progresses are still good.

So far, our World Cup Stars have not yet been on the water. Their time will come as we reach the lower Series later this week. The heavy rain all day today made some Jumpers drive away from the rain zone to get some last minute practice in before they kick off. Watch out for Ryan Dodd CAN, our Dubna Russia World Cup Jump Champion in your rear view mirror if you are driving in the Calgary area ! However, they did enjoy the warm up at the Lynnwood Ranch last night – see if you can recognise any of these Cowboys !

Calgary Canada will be the target for many of our World Cup Waterski athletes for the coming week. Now that our successful Dubna Russia World Cup Stop has been completed, we are now likely to see many of the World Championships titles captured by our World Cup stars – and we will bring you all that news here over the week.

For the past few weeks, Calgary’s own Jaret Llewellyn

The Jock Wilson Radio Show

has been the subject of a whole range of Radio, TV and Newspaper focus. He has worked tirelessly to ensure that the 2009 World Waterski Championships will attract a record number of spectators. This blitz continued tonight when he and IWSF Media Chairman Des Burke-Kennedy were interviewed by the famous Sports Radio star Jock Wilson on Radio CHQR 770AM. This high profile show targets a very influential audience and hopefully many will join us at the Calgary World Championships at the Predator Bay Lakes of Kastynstone site in this coming week.

Watch out for all the World Championships news here before we then turn our attention to our coming World Cup Stops in Liuzhou China and Putrajaya Malaysia. Both Stops will continue our world-wide programme to bring the very best Waterski and Wakeboard stars to major important population centres around the world. The only difference this time will be that we are likely to have some new World Champions on board !
